How would you like to be able to customize
MacFormula with your own values or symbols? Well, you
now have the capability to do exactly that. Choosing
the AddSymbols command from under the Special menu
brings up a modal dialog which allows you to add, delete,
and change the parameters in the symbol table. The values
that are currently stored are very accurate, especially
the “Exact Mass” values. I know this is true, because I
used these values to calculate High Resolution Mass Spec
values for the compounds in my dissertation, and they came
out right on the money. However, if you want to change
them that’s entirely up to you.
IF YOU MAKE CHANGES TO THE SYMBOL TABLE, PLEASE
DO NOT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MODIFIED VERSION OF
MACFORMULA
To make changes:
First of all, although it is not hilited, the “Add”
button is the default button, hitting <CR> or <ENTER>
is the same as clicking this button with the mouse.
To add a symbol, type in either an UPPERCASE
one-character symbol, or a two-character symbol with
the first letter UPPERCASE and the second letter
lowercase. It is very important that this protocol
is followed exactly. Also, you must choose a symbol
that is not currently being used, if you do not then
MacFormula will let you know. After choosing your
symbol, enter in a value for the average mass and the
exact mass. These values may not be greater than 10
characters (including the decimal point). If you want
to change an existing symbol, delete it first and then
re-add it with the new values. If you are not sure if
a symbol already exists, enter the symbol and hit the
“Find” button. After you have made all of your changes,
press the “Save Changes” button to make them permanent.
Hitting the “Cancel” button anytime before hitting the
“Save Changes” button will discard all of the changes
(or mistakes) you have made up to that point.
I have already entered values for 'Ph', 'Me', and
'Bu.' I can't remember if I put anymore in there. Use
MacFormula to calculate values for your new symbols
and write them down on paper before entering the
“AddSymbols” mode.
